Project Overview

Our client, based in Dore and Totley in She9ield, requested two bespoke oak staircases for their modern family home. The brief was to create a warm, luxurious feel while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. This project required premium materials, excellent craftsmanship, and precise execution. We proposed an all-oak staircase complemented by glass balustrades to maximize light and create a sleek, elegant look.

Project Details

  • Location:Dore and Totley, Sheffield
  • Scope: Manufacture of two bespoke oak staircases
  • Materials: Oak treads, oak risers, oak newel posts, toughened glass balustrade
  • Duration: 3 weeks
  • Key Features: Oak construction with a contemporary glass balustrade

Design and Planning

The client’s vision was to have a seamless transition between the floors, utilizing natural oak to create a cohesive, luxurious feel throughout the home. Our design team worked to select the oak that o9ered beautiful grain patterns, durability, and a
consistent tone.

The glass balustrades were chosen to allow light to flow freely between the floors, adding a sense of openness and enhancing the visibility of the intricate woodwork.

The First Staircase: Entrance to First Floor

For the main staircase:

– Oak Treads and Risers: Each tread and riser was crafted from solid oak, providing a robust and durable surface. The oak was finished with a clear matte lacquer, highlighting the natural beauty of the wood grain while providing protection.
– Oak Newel Posts: We custom-designed the newel posts to serve as focal points, featuring simple yet elegant lines that align with the contemporary style of the home.
– Glass Balustrade: To enhance the modern aesthetic, we incorporated a glass balustrade system. The clear, toughened glass panels were fixed using discreet stainless-steel clamps, ensuring safety without compromising the minimalist look.

The result was a staircase that exuded sophistication and seamlessly connected the entrance hall to the main living areas on the first floor. The combination of oak and glass created a stunning visual impact, making it a statement piece as soon as you walked in the door.

The Second Staircase: First Floor to Loft Conversion

The second staircase, leading from the first floor to a newly completed loft conversion,
followed a similar design ethos:

– Consistent Material Choice: We used the same oak treads, risers, and newel posts to maintain design continuity throughout the property.
-Compact Design: Given the space constraints of the loft conversion, the staircase had to be designed with a steeper incline while still adhering to building regulations. The glass balustrade made the space feel larger and more open, ofsetting the steeper
pitch.
– Safety and Durability: The fitter ensured all components were securely installed, using toughened glass panels that provide strength without sacrificing style.

This staircase provided a practical yet elegant solution for accessing the new loft area, transforming what could have been a simple access point into an attractive design feature.
